AYELET ROSE GOTLIEB
WORLD-JAZZ EXPERIMENTAL
BIO
Described as an “intoxicating vocalist” (Vancouver Sun) with an “individually rigorous tone” (Ben Ratliff, New York Times), Ayelet Rose Gottlieb is the a multi-disciplinary artist building cultural bridges and weaving sonic dreams. Her sound blends jazz, middle-eastern & Jewish music in a contemporary, adventurous approach.
A collaborator of John Zorn, ETHEL string quartet and founder of Orchard of Pomegranates, Ayelet’s recent celebrated release “13 Lunar Meditations” continues her collaboration with Palestinian poet Naomi Shihab Nye in the evocative song “Moon Over Gaza,” featuring Armenian-American guitarist Aram Bajakian.
In May 2021 Ayelet premiered a new band at Festival International Musique Actuelle Victoriaville, with Persian percussion, Viola d’Amor, electric guitar, contrabass and drums. The band, originating from Israel, Iran, France and Canada was reviewed on MEFD (translated from French):
“With daring arrangements and well-measured delicacy, the quintet skilfully navigates Gottlieb's compositions which are vivid and in-tune with what is currently best in contemporary jazz. Gottlieb's voice is very nuanced, with great power yet never overpowering. The strength of this group is having the precise mix, in their hyper-organic way, between the voice and the instruments. I hope they will perform on stage again for other ears, because this opening concert was exceptional.”

Gottlieb is one of those singers, like Rokia Traore or Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,
whose voice can convey great power and soul, even when singing in a language unfamiliar to listeners”
- Jon Garelick, Jazziz magazine
"The communal spirit of Ayelet Rose Gottlieb's 13 Lunar Meditations: Summoning the Witches feels like a gift. [...] It feels like Gottlieb wrote this work to encourage active listening [...] There is so much poignancy and power within this material."
- Robert Ham, Downbeat
